The Russian Museum is the hugest national museum in the world and
now it is home to more than 400,000 works of art, including ancient icons
and examples of the Russian avant-garde movement. On this tour you will
visit Mikhailovsky Palace, which contains art collections from ancient
times to the 19th century, and the Benois Wing, where the famous
Russian avant-garde collection is on display. The General Staff Building,
belonging to St. Petersburg’s most famous architectural monuments,
which was constructed according to architect K.I. Rossi’s design in
1820-1828. Before the February Revolution in 1917, it housed supreme
state authorities of the Russian Empire. Now it is a part of the Hermitage
museum and there you may find dedicated areas demonstrating
contemporary art works, the Museum of Guards, as well as halls with
restored historical interiors.
