Experience a private guided 1-hour tour of the Faberge Museum in the
company of a museum licensed guide. During the tour the museum's
headline attraction - nine priceless, imperial Fabergé eggs - are given the
full attention they deserve. Only 50 imperial eggs were ever made, right
here in St. Petersburg, by jeweler to the tsars Carl Fabergé. Each was
given as a lavish Easter gift by the last two tsars to their wives and
mothers. Like every imperial egg, those in place here - whether gold or
agate, enameled or jeweled - are exquisite.
Beyond the imperial eggs, there are snuff boxes, figurines and fabulous
objets d'art from the House of Fabergé and other noted Russian jewelers,
plus a gallery of classical Russian paintings and a roomful of religious
icons. Shuvalov Palace is a masterpiece in itself; all parquet floors and
richly upholstered walls that reflect the sheer opulence of Russia's
imperial age. But lovely as the house and its exhibitions are, the imperial
eggs - Fabergé's finest works - remain the star attraction. With their
extravagance, delicate beauty and tragic, regal history, both they and Carl
Fabergé's genius are truly legendary.
